Product Description
Aligned with the Grade 1 Ontario Social Studies, Music, and Language curricula.

** This is part of my Grade 1 Social Studies Kit (Ontario Revised Curriculum, 2013).
** This activity is also part of my Local and Global Communities Integrated Activity.

In this assignment, students will create an 8-beat chant to describe a community. The package has several pages which scaffold the activity for students into very important stages. This activity is intended to span over a week or two (or three)! After completion, students can orally present their community chants.

I've used this activity in two very different Grades 1/2 classes so far and it's been a hit (click here for the combined-grades package).

** Social Studies
- Grade 1 - The Local Community
** Music
- Grade 1 - quarter notes and eighth notes + rests

It fits in well with the Grade 2 Ontario Music Educators' Association unit plan as a starting point (especially for those without strong musical knowledge) - or can stand alone by itself (and your wonderful lessons).

Grade 1s will:
- make lists describing their local community
- select favourite words (critical thinking)
- sort words based on their rhythmic notation as per the Grade 1 Music curriculum
- write words and notation onto square templates
- arrange words in an interesting manner to create an 8-beat chant
* includes 2 final product page templates (one that includes the possibility of a rest and another without)

You can get a reportable mark/observation and comments for:
- music
- social studies
- oral communication
- writing
** Rubric based on the Ontario Achievement Charts included.

Grade 1 Social Studies Materials {Ontario Curriculum}
** My Responsibilities: Heritage and Identity {Ontario Curriculum}
