This activity pack is a perfect cross-over for Language Arts & Science. I've used this to incorporate literature and writing into my pollution unit. Typically I'll have students research and have background information on pollution first. Then we'll read the original Dr. Seuss story . We discuss the story as a whole and what examples of pollution are shown in the story and the impacts of that pollution. Next, I have students do a creative writing activity where they make up a new ending to the story. Its fun and allows them to flex their writing muscles in science class! The last thing we do is watch the newer film version (2012) and compare/contrast with the book. Depending on your class period length, it takes about a week to do the entire activity pack.
Included in this activity pack:
- Pollution brainstorm
- Types of Pollution organizational chart
- reading comprehension questions
- Student "re-write" creative writing activity
- Book vs. movie compare & contrast questions and graphic organizer
