This is a hands-on, creative, and fun activity that encourages students to think about the themes in Lord of the Flies and express one of the themes through art. For this particular activity, the theme of civilization vs. savagery is the focus. After discussing this theme in class, the students will be given the direction sheet that explains the assignment. The activity involves brainstorming on drawing paper, conferencing with the teacher, painting their sketch on painting paper, and writing a written rationale. Therefore, multiple grades can be given for this project. A corresponding rubric aligned to the Common Core State Standards is provided along with a rationale sheet. The materials needed for students include: painting paper, paint brushes, paint, pencils, colored pencils, rulers, and drawing paper.
Note: This project works well with any theme in this novel. Also, this project can be done after several chapters of the book have been read.
