Product Description
This is lesson plan I developed for 10th graders during the World War One unit. The assignment has students interpret literature quotes from Gertrude Stein and Ernest Hemingway as well as art from Pablo Picasso and Otto Dix. This isn't the most exciting lesson but very student-centered. Adjustments can and should be made depending on the class, some can do more by themselves, some need more scaffolding. I placed this lesson within the center of my unit, but towards the end might be a better option.
The lesson is as follows
1. Pass out literary excepts page (.doc)
3. Opener on word choice, purpose, emotions (ppt)
2. Class discussion on Gertrude Stein Quote (ppt)
3. Direct instruction on Gertrude Stein and Ernest Hemingway (ppt)
4. Return to Gertrude Stein Quote if needed (ppt)
5. Unpack in class discussion Hemingway quote (ppt)
6. Direct instruction on Picasso and Otto Dix (ppt)
7. Pass out graphic organizer for art interpretation
8. Depending on the class unpack Guernica by Picasso with them (could possibly add the context of Guernica painting - Germans bombing of a Spanish city during the Spanish civil war) (ppt and doc)
9. Let students unpack Trench Warfare by Otto Dix by themselves in groups or individually (ppt and doc)
10. Assign a writing assignment with direction located on ppt and back of literary excerpts (ppt and doc)
11. Closer - what was the most interesting thing you learned today, how did you learn it (verbal)
