One of the interesting and ironic elements of "The Lottery" is how many of the terms and symbols in the story have positive connotations and thereby add to the tranquil setting and mood. This mood, of course, constrasts starkly with brutality of the villagers' actions. This worksheet asks students to work with some of the key symbols and terms in the story and to brainstorm common connotations for these terms in our world, and then to associate these terms and their connotations with appropriate mood words. An additional handout is included that provides 4 columns of words of used to described mood and atmosphere in literature. Teacher's notes are also included. These notes can be used as a starting point to assess student work, or as an overhead during class discussion, or even as a handout. This worksheet would be well-used as a starting point for a written assignment, on mood and/or irony in the story. This worksheet can be purchased individually here or it can also be purchased as part of "The Lottery" Bundle on my TPT website: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/nico .
