PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

I use this activity as an introduction to Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery." Before I assign the story, I give students the scenario on this handout, which asks them to debate the idea of personal freedoms versus the common good. Students are divided into defense, prosecution, and jury. I don't reveal what the "tradition" in question is--we are instead debating the town's right to have a tradition that the members of the town believe are for the common good.
