In this document, you will find a four-page reading assessment for Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” complete with answer key.I designed this assessment with the idea that students could take the assessment while they had the story open beside them. My aim is not to assess memory but to assess understanding. You will notice that the students have to do quite a bit of reading as they track through this assessment—it is a “reading” assessment, after all. And the questions are similar in structure to what students will see on the PARCC exam.
Note: After reading this story, you might want to show the Encyclopedia Britannica short film version of this story, which I find on Youtube. It dates to 1969, but I think students today still enjoy it.
