Product Description
The wonderfully disturbing world of Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” we know is a poke at the stodgy New Englanders in the town Jackson lived in with her husband, a college professor. A discussion on traditions is a nice activator for this attention-grabbing short story. Students, even reluctant writers and readers, will be pulled in with a story prediction—building anticipation—and then after reading Jackson’s macabre poke at the mindless tradition of “lotteries,” students will compare and contrast her version to their own. Jackson is known for her surprise endings as well, and “The Lottery” will shock and unnerve even the most jaded teenager in front of you. This lesson plan is a lot of fun, promotes engagement, and creates an opportunity for success as there is no wrong guess in a story prediction. For ESL students, or students who struggle with writing, a Venn diagram might suffice as a way of comparing and contrasting. Enjoy and my best always, Rockermom
