Product Description
Shirley Jackson's controversial short story "The Lottery" is an excellent read to pair with a lesson on allegory, AND was coincidentally published only several years before Lord of the Flies. This two page handout may serve as a homework activity, in class writing, or quiz, based on the students' comprehension of the short story, and how it relates to allegory and Lord of the Flies. Four questions are included, in addition to a short rubric (which can be modified depending on the teacher's preferred grading method) and MLA citation reminders on the second page. Teachers may wish to print off the handout in class or post it to a website (like Google Classroom or Blackboard) and have the students engage in a "silent discussion" about the questions.
