The United States purchased the Louisiana Territory (828,000 sq. miles) from Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte of France in 1803. The Louisiana Purchase was the largest territorial gain in US history and doubled the size of the United States. The "new" territory contained land that would eventually become seven states in the Union. The Louisiana Purchase Treaty was signed on April 30, 1803. President Thomas Jefferson announced the treaty to the American people on July 4th of the same year. Shortly after the treaty President Jefferson commissioned Captain Merriweather Lewis and Second Lieutenant William Clark to lead an expedition called The Corp of Discovery to map and explore the newly acquired land.
Included in this set are images of Thomas Jefferson, Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, Lewis and Clark, and President Jefferson mapping the details of the Purchase with Captain Lewis,; a scroll announcing the purchase; a journal of maps and sketches; a surveying camera on a tripod; vista of the newly acquired landscape with the Rocky Mountains in the distance; a map of the territory as it fits in the current map of the United States; and flags of France and the United Stated in 1803.
The set will download as a zip file which is easy peasy to open! You'll then see your individual images and will be good to go!
