Product Description
(This activity is unrelated to another one with music and The Lovely Bones that I have available).
Make connections between a song by Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) and the scene from the movie (or chapter) in The Lovely Bones when Susie is lured into Mr. Harvey's underground trap. I have re-printed the lyrics to the song and then posed thoughtful questions beside them. You can play the song by finding it on YouTube or other music apps, or just use the printed lyrics. I have shown the scene in the movie with the volume down and played the song over it and it is really effective.

This activity prompts students to think about the dark pathology of Mr. Harvey, and about what makes him the way he is. Questions also reveal Susie's multi-dimensional position as a victim. Then, after analyzing the song lyrics and jotting down responses, students can do a full writing prompt. (I have included a separate question with writing space at the end).

Example questions/prompts beside the lyrics include:
1) Explain the term “effigy” and how it relates to Mr. Harvey, as well as how it might relate to Susie or Mr. Harvey’s victims.
2) Now use the text of this stanza to explain the psychopathology of Mr. Harvey. In what specific ways does this part of the song convey the mindset of the serial killer?"
