When I teach my poetry unit, we do a lot of reading of poetry, we do poet studies and, of course we write a lot of poetry! I needed something to simplify the process for my students and for me. I designed this booklet so that each of the 23 different types of poems is described simply, with examples of how to go about writing one. Then, students are guided through the writing with a step-by-step worksheet. They end up with a finished poem every time!
Not only are students able to work independently in the classroom, missed days (and instructions) are no longer a problem, and I can also leave my poetry teaching for a substitute teacher, if necessary.
When I teach my unit, I only formally teach 8 of the poetry types. With the poet studies and the reading of poetry (among other activities), 8 is just the right number. The others types of poems are included for my fast finishers, for students who take a shine to poetry, and just for the sake of a little variety.
At the end of my unit, students hand in a poetry portfolio of a minimum of 8 poems, plus a title page and table of contents (see the freebie in my TPT store for the rubric.)
Here's to the magic of poetry!
P.S. If you're not sure you want to purchase the entire booklet, why not try one of my Magic of Poetry Mini-Books?
