I love using this PowerPoint to introduce the concept of main idea and details. I first point out to the students that the main idea is like the sum of a math problem. If 9+4+5=18, a detail+detail+detail=the main idea. Slowly introduce each slide and have kids infer what the main idea could possibly be. Once they have viewed each of the three slides, the main idea becomes a piece of cake (and also a math equation). Please enjoy the three different examples I've given to my students. They will catch on quickly, and they are often eager to make an equation of their own.
