Informational passages and assessments that are close-reading ready, lengthy but also engaging, and aligned with Common Core Standards are an important aspect of many elementary school ELA programs. This product is sold as an example of what I offer to meet this resource need and is not part of any bundled collection offered in my store.
This is the story of the actions and life of Joseph Lee, the man who almost single-handedly introduced the idea of children’s playgrounds to the inner cities and schools of the United States. It was written for Grade 3-5 students and can be used in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, direct instruction in class, independent practice, homework, test prep, assessment, centers, etc).
The product includes:
1) An engaging 800-word informational passage called “The Man Who Invented Playgrounds.” The article tells the story of wealthy Bostonian Joseph Lee (1862-1937), the man whose energy and passion for healthy sports and recreational activities for children started the playground movement in the United States that we all take for granted today. Flesch Kincaid Reading Level = 4.8
2) A set of 15 questions, from basic comprehension to more creative student work, written to align with these Common Core Informational Text Standards: RI.4.1, RI.4.5, and RI.4.7. Answers are included to all questions.
3) Teacher’s Notes and Activities/Ideas that can be used to extend the study of playgrounds for one-three more class periods.
