This lesson plan uses a short fictional reader to introduce students to the topic of slavery in Jamaica. Students will read a story entitled, Nanny and the Boiling Pot. The topic is, Nanny, an escaped slave who led the Maroons on many daring exploits. The story is a retold legend that is well-known to Jamaican children. Students will listen to a musical selection of Maroon drum music, learn about the slavery they endured, engage with the story and discuss, complete a Fact or Fiction? chart, and complete a homework assignment to learn new vocabulary words.
