Judi Barrett is famous for her Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs book, but did you know she wrote another one called The Marshmallow Incident?
Knowing how popular the movie was, we decided to explore the original book with students, as well as looking at other books Mrs. Barrett wrote. This is a packet created for students to use after reading the story, The Marshmallow Incident.
Depending on the age, it’s a great conversation starter about diversity in the world today and its acceptance (or lack of it). You could also pair this book up with The Peanut Butter Battle or The Sneetches, both by Dr. Seuss, which look at similar
themes. To bring in modern media, you can look at the “left twix/right twix” commercials via YouTube and have students make connections to the book.
I chose to make the packet 2-sided to save on paper (and our copier is able to do this), but you can pick/choose papers, use the whole packet, or use just 1-2 pages. I tried to incorporate not only plot and theme, but also a little fun! This was created for a first
grade activity, but can really be used with any age from K-3 or special needs class.
However you use it, I hope you find it beneficial to your students!
