This lesson applies the ELA common core standards. It includes close reading skills and asks students to include text-based evidence when answering questions about the text. It also asks the students to make evidence based claims based on resource materials about the plague and support their claims with information from those resources. I have adapted the story "The Masque of the Red Death" from the Prentice Hall textbook to do similar tasks as O'Dell's close reading activities and making evidence based claims. This lesson includes handouts and a pre-reading editing sentence to prepare the students for what they will be reading. It also includes text-based questions, project based analysis activities, and a short writing assignment asking students to make and support their own claims.
