Hi! This is a great game I use with my students on the first day of school, and as a quick "filler" when we have a minute to spare before changing classes or dismissal. (They LOVE this game, and often beg me to play it with them!!)
The premise is simple. Ask a student to think of any number from 1 - 31, but to not tell you what the number is. I usually ask this student to write the number down and show it to his/her neighbors, or even to whisper the number to the class as I step into the hallway for a second. Then, amaze the students as you are able to "guess" the mystery number while looking through the number cards!
The game works like this: as you hold up each of the number cards, ask the student if he/she sees his/her number on the card. If the answer is yes, you need to remember the number printed in the top left corner. (It will be 1, 2, 4, 8, or 16.) If the answer is no, just move on to the next card. Each time a student confirms that the number he/she has chosen is on a card, you just need to add it to the number from the top left corner that you've already remembered! If you've added correctly...you'll guess the number once you've gone through all five cards.
I have used this game with students from 1st grade through 8th grade, and everyone is always really impressed. They think I'm psychic...so of course, I *never* tell them the trick! ;)
I suggest printing the numbered pages on heavy card stock -- I have put each page on a different color -- and laminating for years of use. Thanks - and have fun! ~Kristy Gross
