This is THE PERFECT 2 day math project to use on those pesky two days before Thanksgiving break. Students use substitution equations to calculate how much food they would need to provide to host a friends-giving. (example: it’s recommended that you have 1.5 pounds of turkey per person. So the equation is 1.5x and they would plug in their number of guests). There are two options available in this packet: a page where the equations are provided and a page where students would have to write the equation before solving.
After students have calculated how much food they need it’s time to go shopping. They go through grocery ads (online or you can pick them up at the front of any grocery store) to make their shopping list. They base their quantities from their calculations from the day before. After they total the cost of their entire list; they add the sales tax and determine the cost per person to host the dinner.
I’ve always found this project to be very high interest and I’m sure your students will enjoy it as well! If you like it, be sure to check out my other items!
