This is a viewing guide for the sixth episode of the History Channel's miniseries The Men Who Built America. The episode is called "Owning It All."
The Men Who Built America is a great series for a discussion of Gilded Age entrepreneurs. The series reveals the personalities behind the moguls, giving a decent background regarding their attitudes and approaches. Additionally, it elucidates the techniques they used to rise to prominence and fits them into their larger socio-historical context (don't worry - I don't use words like that in guides intended for high schoolers!). This episode focuses on J.P. Morgan's attempts to control the electric industry by pressing Edison Electric's direct current. Morgan pushes up against Westinghouse and Tesla's Alternating Current. The episode culminates with Rockefeller's attempts to stay relevant by pushing a kerosene byproduct - gasoline.
The viewing guide contains thirteen questions to be completed by the students while they watch the video. Questions are designed to be approachable by both advanced and struggling students. After watching, students can complete an additional question to activate their higher order thinking skills (you could delete this question if you wished).
I sell viewing guides for each episode in the series for 99 cents each. You could purchase them all together for $5.99 (about $2.00 cheaper overall) at the following URL:
