This ready-to-use SmartBoard activity contains three slides. The thumbnails on the right are screen captures of each page.
The first is to be used after reading Act 1, scene 1. Put students into 5 groups and assign each group one of the quotations. Tell them how much time they have (5 min. should suffice) to find the quotation, record the speaker and listener, and to discuss what is being said and why this is significant. Set and start the timer at the top of the page. Once the time has run out, have each group member choose a colour, and use the spinner to decide who will share the group's response. Alternatively, you could spin twice so one can share and one can write on the Smart Board. You can add more colours to the spinner if groups are larger than 4. Using the spinner makes it so all group members are accountable!
Page 2 is to be used after reading Act 1, scene 2. It's a quick matching game. Students match each of Portia's previous suitors with her description of them. Once finished, click "Check" to see if they're right.
Page 3 is an extension of page 2. Once again, the timer and spinner has been included if you choose to have students complete and share in groups. Once you have reviewed each criticism, discuss students' impressions (with reasons) of Portia.
