This bumper vocabulary activity is a fun method of ensuring that students are familiar with important words from the play by William Shakespeare. The puzzle contains 44 words, each of which is important in the plot.
Words included are .. accuse, blame, bond, casket, Christian, clerk, condition, confiscate, contract, debt, disguise, ducat, elope, fortune, gondola, hazard, heiress, husband, infidelity, interest, Jew, jewels, loan, lottery, masque, melancholy, merchant, mercy, pardon, plead, portrait, prejudice, preside, promise, revenge, scroll, shed, ship, suitors, swear, verdict, wealthy, wisdom, and woo.
Although students often see the puzzle format as a fun task, it is an active learning activity. It helps students with spelling and comprehension of important words.
This is the type of activity that you could use with early finishers, or give to a sub teacher, or use as a filler on a day when you have nothing else prepared.
A word bank is supplied to support students. You could redact this to make the puzzle more challenging.
The solution is printed on the second page. Download the preview file to see the solution and the grid.
