Teach students to use metaphor effectively in their writing--and let them have a little fun too! UPDATED SEPTEMBER 2020 with an option for distance learning - if you want the digital version only, click here.

(This is part of my Figurative Language Challenges Bundle).

I created these challenges when I realized that my students -- who could parrot back the definition of a metaphor, and even identify ones in their texts -- could not easily create their own. The challenges, then, are designed to give them practice with the process required to first find the similarities between words/ideas, and then to create a metaphor that makes an effective comparison.

First, there is a slideshow that presents three very common metaphors about life. It walks students through the process that a writer would use to try to find connections between ideas and then to capture those similarities in a metaphor.

Next, you will find three different options for challenging your students to write metaphors. The first two are quick and could be used for skill-building only. Each of them can be followed with a short writing assignment that asks students to write a paragraph that extends the metaphor.

The word strips and student handouts are completely editable, so you can tweak them to meet the needs or your class.

I also have The Metaphor Challenge, The Personification Challenge, The Allusion Challenge and The Idiom-Imagery Challenge and The Hyperbole Challenge. If you'd like to save and buy all of them, check out my Figurative Language Challenges Bundle.
