Christianity, is the name given to the system of religious beliefs and practices which was taught by Jesus Christ in the country of Palestine during the reign of the Roman Emperor Tiberius. The new Christian religion emerged based on the testimony of the Scriptures, as interpreted by the life of Jesus Christ and the teaching of His Apostles, which were documented in the Bible.

Growing rapidly in its early days, it became accepted and institutionalized over time. By the time of the Middle Ages, the only recognized religion was Christianity, in the form of the Catholic Church. During this time various religious institutions became important, rich and powerful. From birth to death, whether you were a peasant, a serf, a noble a lord or a King - life was dominated by the church.

All other sects were viewed as heretical. This would put the Church in direct conflict with the Rise of Islam and open the door to many religious crusades.
