This 65-minute lesson plan explores the questions: What role has the US government played in creating the conditions that Central American asylum seekers are fleeing? What can be done to help resolve this crisis? First, students prepare to watch a video that covers 200 years of U.S. intervention in Latin America by previewing some important vocabulary terms. Then, during the video, students use a notes checklist to keep track of the timeline of events. Next, students use the International Rescue Committee's site to do a short webquest activity about ways people and organizations can help this refugee crisis. The lesson ends with some reflection about whether the US has a responsibility to help improve conditions in Central America and what actions students think they might take to help these refugees.
