This 65-minutes lesson plan explores the questions: Are members of the “Migrant Caravan” breaking the law by attempting to enter the United States? What is the legal process for seeking asylum? In a jigsaw activity, students examine some viral photos of the caravan that have been debunked. Then they use their knowledge of asylum law to conduct some fact checking of the claims of an immigration "expert." The lesson ends with some time to reflect on how public opinion of a topic like Central American asylum seekers can be swayed by false claims on the news and on social media and what we can each do to prevent ourselves from believing and/or sharing unsupported claims. This is the third lesson in a bundle of four, but it can also be implemented as a stand-alone.
