Mindfulness is the conscious state of being aware of your environment. This series begins with an introduction that allows students to become aware of themselves; their breathing, the sounds, sights, tastes and things they feel around them. It also looks at the classroom and the school.
The second session looks at our environment and what we expect by being in a new classroom. Do our hopes meet the expectations that others have?
The conduct we expect to find in a classroom and how we, as students, behave is the focus of the third series. But we can also look at what we expect from the teacher and the school in this regard.
Our study skills and how we can best facilitate an appropriate learning environment is the focus of the fourth series and the fifth series looks at learning styles and what our preferences are for the way we learn.
The mindfulness series is an attempt to provide teachers with a resource to influence or shape the classroom. It takes only ten minutes and this can be done once a week. There is an audio on the PowerPoint platform that the teachers can play and the teacher can choose the focus. The background music continues as the students reflect on the topic. A simple worksheet is provided as a means of gathering those thoughts but it is not a mandatory task. In fact, these sessions do not fit the curriculum standards in that they don't address literacy or numeracy. What they do do is make us more aware of how we learn and what we expect. It can be used as a means to shape the atmosphere of the classroom. As such, the sessions have an indirect influence on what we ultimately achieve academically.
