This is a five question quiz I use with my students after reading Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Minister's Black Veil." As I am always seeking ways to give students credit for the work they complete, I use small quizzes such as these to easily assess whether a student has completed all the reading, from start to finish. These are not your typical questions, as they require details that can only be provided if a student has actually completed the reading. I will usually assign this short story for homework or have students take turns reading this aloud in class and follow up with this quiz.
This can also be used as a lesson plan for your substitute if you will be out for the day. Students can read this short story in small groups, or independently, during the period. Then ask your substitute to distribute this quiz at the end of class.
