The Missing Golden Ticket is a book of interesting trivia about Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The book includes a complete chapter that was edited out before publication of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and information about original names and ideas for the crazy characters. He originally had about a dozen nasty characters, and this book gives you information about the personalities that did not make the final draft.
I use different sections of the book to give students a sense of an author's writing process and how much goes into editing.
Students do not need to read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in order for the writing activities to work well, but they should have a little background knowledge of the movies or the book before beginning The Missing Golden Ticket excerpts.
