This story kit contains everything you need to complete whole group comprehension lessons and stations. Activities for word work, listening, writing and reading.
Sequencing Pocket Chart Pictures and Word Cards – use the cards to match character pictures with names; Place the animals in the order they appear in the story.
Retelling Pocket Chart Pictures and Word Cards – use the cards to retell the beginning, middle and end of the story. A Retelling anchor chart is included. Retelling activities: Retelling Bag, pocket chart sort, 2 recording sheets, and retelling rope.
Emergent Reader – Cut and past the animal to match each page. Use this emergent reader in guided reading groups, read to self or read with a partner.
Adjectives – Write adjectives that describe a mitten or glove. I bring a mitten or glove from home and we pass it around. As a whole group, we come up with words that describe it. We also describe the mitten in the story.
Adjectives – I have students bring a mitten or glove from home. They color the picture to match their mitten or glove. Then, complete the sentences.
Compare and Contrast – Two Venn Diagram recording pages are provided, Use the Venn Diagram to compare a mitten and glove. Use the Venn Diagram to compare The Hat and The Mitten by Jan Brett.
Making Connections – Use the recording pages to make a text to self connection or a text to text connection.

Write the Room – Students write the names of the animals in the story.
Rhyming Mittens – Students choose a card. Mark whether or not the pictures rhyme on the recording page.
CVC words – Students build cvc words using magnetic letters and record the words on the recording page.
Syllables – clap the words and record them under the appropriate column,
Design a Mitten – Crayon Resist craft. I have my students design the mittens and cut them out. We hang them on a “clothesline” on our bulletin board. Makes a cute display!
