Dig deep with these favorites! This download is a Close Reading Lesson Plan (5 days of whole group lessons) for The Mixed-Up Chameleon and Elmer, designed for Kindergarten or First Grade. Extensions can be taken over multiple days.
End of Week Performance Task: What lesson do Elmer and the Chameleon both learn about themselves? Use evidence from the story to support your answer.
Students will read the text each day with a different focus and objective. Each day leads to students being able to determine the shared theme both characters learn in the stories.

Daily Outline:
Essential Question: How can I explain the lesson two characters, from different stories, both learn about themselves?
Day 1: Read The Mixed-Up Chameleon to identify how the main character changes from the beginning to the end.
Day 2: Read Elmer to identify how the main character changes from the beginning to the end.
Day 3: Reread portions of both texts to describe characters using vocabulary words during key events.
Day 4: Reread portions of both texts to compare and contrast the Chameleon and Elmer.
Day 5: Students answer performance task question independently.

Each daily lesson plan includes: Lesson Plan page with objectives, assessment criteria, answer key, instructional sequence, target questions posed along with expected student answers and scaffolding questions to support students as needed. The scaffolding questions are designed to help students organize their thinking and understanding in smaller chunks to reach the target question. Differentiated forms of assessment task cards and graphic organizers for students, and anchor chart designs also included.
There is a template to print questions/vocabulary on post-its and place in the book before teaching for easy reference. Please note: on each post-it, you will find, for the corresponding page, key vocabulary and the main lesson plan questions (scaffolding questions are on the actual lesson plan).

Also included:
-Anecdotal notes sheet for recording student progress throughout the week
-10 vocabulary cards and several blank cards
-5-day Vocabulary Plan with picture cards and ideas for assessment
-Performance Task to post
-5 extension ideas to continue the learning!
