Product Description
The Monaco Method for Early Literacy is an integrated literacy program based on Teacher’s Creatures Phonics Puppets. I have been using it since 2004 to teach kindergarteners and first graders how to read, write, and spell with complete success.

The Monaco Method meets the Common Core State Standards for kindergarten and first grade Reading Foundational Skills.

My method works because children fall in love with Teacher’s Creatures. I’ve had students who were disappointed about going on vacation, and students who would tell their mom to drive faster on the way to school, because they didn’t want to miss meeting a puppet. Children feel a connection with Teacher’s Creatures, which makes the puppets’ stories, sounds, and body motions easy to remember. With this information in their minds, students can easily recall letter sounds as they learn to read.

My program is simple and logical, making implementation fun and easy. I have designed it in a way that makes the most sense for teaching reading, handwriting, and spelling effectively. The Monaco Method was designed for kindergarten, but portions are appropriate for pre-K and first grade. The Monaco Method builds a solid foundation for any language arts program in public school, private school, homeschool, or special education.

The Monaco Method includes:

1. Teacher's Creatures Phonics Puppets A-Z (Teacher Set with Songs and Motions) Teacher’s Creatures Phonics Puppets are a set of 26 printable alphabet stick puppets that introduce beginning readers to phonics. Each puppet teaches a simple, memorable song that teaches a letter sound and corresponding body motion. A list of song lyrics and motions is included with this set. If you would like the actual M-PEG 4 audio files, please email me at teacherscreatures@comcast.net after your purchase or search "Singing With the Chunk Puppets" on Youtube to hear the tune (the tune is the same for all the songs). Each puppet can be printed, cut, and laminated, then attached to a tongue depressor.. and you're ready to teach! Children feel a connection with Teacher's Creatures and easily recall their stories and motions (and therefore letter sounds) when learning to read. Search "Teacher's Creatures At Work" on Youtube to see the puppets in action!

2. Teacher's Creatures Phonics Puppets A-Z (Student Set to Color and Take Home) Teacher’s Creatures Phonics Puppets A-Z (Student Set to Color and Take Home) are a set of 26 printable alphabet stick puppets (black and white outlines of the original puppets) that students can color and attach to a tongue depressor, then take home to share with their families.

3. Teacher's Creatures Beginning Handwriting Workbook (63 pages) The Teacher's Creatures Beginning Handwriting Workbook is a printable PDF handwriting workbook that teaches children how to write each letter of the alphabet in uppercase and lowercase form. It also teaches children to read and write CVC words using all five vowels. The workbook features my original handwritten font "Get Real" and uses clear, simple instructions for handwriting. The workbook presents each of 26 Teacher's Creatures Phonics Puppets in an illustrated scene that brings its story to life. The puppets give clear, simple handwriting instructions in a speech bubble.

I designed a handwriting workbook for my literacy program (The Monaco Method for Early Literacy) because I was unhappy with the traditional manuscript font found in most language arts workbooks. I feel it is a misrepresentation of how handwritten letters are formed and appear when written. For example, the appearance of a traditional manuscript lowercase “a” leads children to believe that they are supposed to draw a circle then lift their pencil to draw a vertical line- from the middle line to the bottom line- on the right side of the circle. In fact, a lowercase “a” should be formed just the way Antoinette the Alligator describes in The Monaco Method: She says, “Start in the middle. Around like a C, up and down.” I have found that other programs use confusing metaphors and complex instructions to explain handwriting. I feel strongly about using clear, simple instructions when I teach my students to write. For that reason, The Monaco Method handwriting component focuses on two things: where the letter starts and how many ‘pick ups’ it has (how many times you lift your pencil during formation).

I created my own handwritten font, which I named “Get Real”, because I want my students to have an authentic example of handwriting. When children see letters written in the “Get Real” font, they see them exactly as they appear when written by a human hand. Is my font perfect? No! And I struggled with that temporarily because I am a perfectionist. But then I had a realization; nothing handwritten by a human will ever be perfect. So, instead of trying to achieve perfection, I want my students to form letters correctly and carefully, making their writing as lovely as they can.

With this workbook, students use printed worksheets to practice writing, using my real, handwritten font as an example. They build confidence through tracing, then write independently. When students learn about a letter, they need to know what it’s called, how it sounds, and how to write it in uppercase and lowercase form. With a handwriting component, students will have a complete understanding of the alphabet.

4. Teacher's Creatures Beginning Language Arts Workbook(127 pages) This workbook includes the same handwriting instruction as the handwriting workbook, but also includes lessons for teaching phonics, reading, and spelling.

5. Teacher's Creatures Short Vowel Neighborhoods (Short Vowel Word Family Houses) Teacher's Creatures Short Vowel Neighborhoods are a collection of 20 short vowel word family houses. There are 4 houses for short A, 3 for short E, 5 for short I, 4 for short O, and 4 for short U. Each house features a picture of the Teacher's Creatures phonics puppet that teaches the corresponding short vowel sound. Students and/or teachers generate CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words for each house. Teachers can print and laminate a class set to display on the wall. Lamination creates a dry erase surface that can be reused year after year. Teachers can also print additional copies for students to fill in and take home. Each neighborhood includes a cover for student books. A street sign is included for each neighborhood if you choose to display the houses on your wall. There are two different line-size options for the houses to fit students' needs. Smaller houses measure 8 in. x 5.5 in. Larger houses measure 8 in x 7.5 in. Also included: a set of roads for the option of displaying your houses in a neighborhood setting and a mini neighborhood which includes all houses and can be printed on both sides of a single page for at-desk reference.

6. Teacher's Creatures Chunk Puppets (Teacher Set with Stories and Motions) Teacher’s Creatures Chunk Puppets are a set of 9 printable stick puppets that teach the sounds for the digraphs SH, TH, and CH, the R-controlled vowels AR and ER/IR/UR, the vowel chunks OW/OU, OY/OI, OO (as in book) and the silent letters B,G,H,K, and W. Each puppet teaches a simple, memorable song that teaches the chunk sound and corresponding body motion. Children feel a connection with Teacher's Creatures and easily recall their stories and motions (and therefore chunk sounds) when learning to read.

Each component of The Monaco Method for Early Literacy is available separately at my Teachers Pay Teachers store "Monaco Lane Curriculum for Early literacy", but when purchased as a package (by downloading this digital file) you save a total of $41.

Read on for information about my original Monaco Method which includes hard goods in addition to digital files and is only available at my website www.monacolane.com

My original Monaco Method includes 40 "real" (three dimensional) finger puppets, which I make by hand with scissors, felt, glue, puff paint, and a sewing machine.

The Method also includes 39 handmade (by my mom!) letter bags for housing items that begin with a certain letter or contain a certain vowel or chunk sound. Each bag is adorned with the puppet’s name in letter beads and is made with a fabric print that also starts with the same letter. After meeting a puppet, students discover the items in the corresponding bag. The letter bags give students the opportunity to see and hold tangible items that offer a phonics extension after learning a letter and its sound. *The puppet that teaches silent letters does not have a letter bag. That's why there are 40 puppets but only 39 bags.

The Method also includes 46 laminated word family houses for short vowels, long vowels, and the chunk sounds covered in this program.
