This is a 20 slide presentation, targeting elementary grades 1-5. It explains how to raise monarch butterflies in your classroom. It begins with vocabulary, teaches the life cycle through photography, highlights popular books for children and offers websites for additional information and activities. It concludes with a little monarch song that is easily taught and reinforces the life cycle. This presentation can be used in the classroom as a teaching framework for teachers to instruct and add their own knowledge and experiences.
Students can become Junior Entomologists and keep science journals as they observe metamorphosis first hand. Journey North, an included website, gives information for classroom teachers to connect with students in Mexico by making paper butterflies that "migrate" to Mexican students. Monarch Watch gives information to create a Monarch Waystation at your school, join the tagging program and also has additional activities and information.
Through this presentation you can incorporate many content areas-geography (the migration to Mexico), literacy (Journey North, science journals), math (estimating size of caterpillars, miles of journey, math word problem books)
This presentation is available in 2 formats, Keynote for Mac users and Power Point for PC users.
