Students will first be directed to YouTube where they will be asked to watch a 9 minute video which will explain the Monroe Doctrine. The reasoning for President Monroe to issue the declaration: Russian and Spanish imperial goals in the Western Hemisphere, American economic interests, and American imperial interests, are all covered. Teddy Roosevelt's use of the Doctrine to further American strategic aims in the early 20th century is also analyzed. Following the video, students will proceed to the History.com site which will give a detailed historical breakdown of the President Monroe and his Secretary of State, John Quincy Adams, goals associated with the Monroe Doctrine. A political cartoon associated with the Monroe Doctrine will also be analysed, allowing students a chance to look at and discuss a primary source. The assignment concludes by looking at more modern presidents (Reagan, Bush Sr.) and their use of the Monroe Doctrine.
