Puzzle (with solution and word bank) based on Chapter 8 of The Moon is Down by John Steinbeck.
There are 23 words/clues in the puzzle. Words used are accuser, arrested, ashamed, battle, brave, caricature, condemn, deadline, debt, denounce, dynamite, escape, execution, explosion, fuse, hostage, jubilant, prophecy, punishment, secret, sentry, Socrates, and war.
A word bank is supplied to support students. You could make the puzzle a lot more challenging by redacting this.
This is the type of activity that makes a useful filler. I use it to keep stronger students occupied while others are finishing other tasks. You could also use it for homework, as a pre-reading vocabulary exercise, or as something to give to a substitute teacher.
Although students see this as a fun activity, it is an active learning task. It helps students with the difficult vocabulary, in terms of both spelling and meaning.
