Excerpt from introductory lecture:
"Since the short story’s initial publication in 1924, “The Most Dangerous Game” has continued to engage readers. Set on a mysterious jungle island inhabited by a former Russian general and his manservant, the story concerns a big-game hunter on his way to the Amazon who becomes the general’s prisoner and must defeat him to survive. The story, however, is more than a riveting action-adventure tale. The general, a big-game hunter himself, has become bored with hunting animals and now takes pleasure in hunting human beings. His rationale for pursuing strange and abhorrent activities on the island raises disturbing questions about man’s basic nature and moral vs. immoral behavior. The story’s themes and the author’s characterizations of the general and his prisoner have inspired much literary analysis and criticism. In 1932, The Most Dangerous Game, a film based on the story, was released by RKO Pictures."
