This Latin and Greek dictionary is a simple tool to help students understand that many English words come from the Latin and Greek Languages. It is aligned with the Common Core Standards and is designed to be a half page dictionary. This package is made up of the front cover, an example sheet so students can see how to fill in each dictionary entry, a blank input sheet and an alphabetized list with stems and affixes, language origin, definition and three suggested words. This sheet is for your use as you teach the affixes and stems.
To ensure that your students understand the meaning of the stems and affixes they need to brainstorm to come up with three English words that contain them. They will also choose one of these words and draw a picture of it. In addition, they have to write a sentence that is 8 words long that contains one of the brainstormed words. Students will need to access dictionaries to help locate words.
By using this dictionary students will strengthen their spelling, reading comprehension, writing and definition skills. This dictionary is also a nice companion piece to my other product, Brain Crackers.
Add these stems and affixes to your word wall.
Create 8 1/2 x 11-inch posters. Write the affix of stem at the top and the definition below it. Laminate the poster. As students find matching affixes and stems throughout the year add them to the posters using markers.
