This novel, dealing with the conflicts and prejudices encountered by a Japanese American family during WWII, is an excellent novel to use with middle school students post 9-11. Students are able to look at the lives of the characters and make predictions and assessments of how Americans of Japanese decent might be treated as a result of the color of their skin. A great book to read in a time of great prejudice and hostility.

This is a supplemental packet to the novel and allows the student to enrich their knowledge of the time period. Students are to compose letters with links on proper formatting. Also included is a map of the United States for children to mark all internment camps. A pictorial worksheet is included, along with pictures, so that students can do a personal analysis of their favorite. Students are also challenged to make lists of essential information, via links, that was not included in the book.

This packet is rich with links so that students are able to find the information needed in each area.
