I love showing the film version of a book after spending a tremendous amount of time on a novel or a play. There is always a lot of great discussion about what the director left out or added to the film version. I have yet to find a film version of Othello that I really like. A few years ago when I taught Othello for the first time I decided instead to show the movie O which is a modernization of the play Othello.
The kids loved the film because it's about a basketball team and high school students. There was one scene in the film that I had to fast forward because it was an "R rated" scene but of course that's up to you.
I made up this handout which summarizes important events in Othello and has students respond with the corresponding events in the film O. Depending upon how long your periods are and how often you want to stop the film it could take several days to watch the entire film.
This handout is part of my Othello unit but at the request of a buyer I have listed this handout separately. If you are interested in the entire unit it's listed here:
