Students will explore the National Museum of American History’s online “Treasures of American History” collection to identify, contextualize, and sequence representational pieces items to learn more about American musical history. Students use the Smithsonian's resources at americanhistory.si.edu/treasures/american-music to learn about items and contextualize them. Then, students sequence these items on a timeline.
This activity could be done as partners in the younger grades, or individually in middle and high school. Teachers will need copies of the item cards and timelines for each student or group, and an internet accessible device for each student or group. It would fit well as a culminating activity or review at the end of the year.
