Product Description
This lesson is a perfect introduction to the study of different cultures. It uses Horace Miner's 1956 article, The Body Rituals of the Nacirema, to illustrate how our biases affect our views of other cultures. After reading about the group of people called the Nacirema who rely on strange magical rites, students will be surprised to learn that the Nacirema are, in fact, Americans.

This lesson includes a link to Horace Miner's article, thought provoking questions for students to answer including follow-up questions once the identity of the Nacirema is revealed, answer keys for the teacher, and a writing activity for students.

Horace Miner's article is advanced reading so this lesson is best directed to upper level classes although it can be adapted to fit lower level classes.

I use the Nacirema lesson along with Archaeological Dig: Using Modern Objects to Learn About Archaeology as the first lessons of the school year for World History.
