Working with students' names is a great way to introduce them to the letters of the alphabet, beginning sounds, syllables, and concepts of print. Perfect for early elementary (kindergarten and first grade) and ELL students. This download contains suggestions of skills your can incorporate in to each activity, ways to connect them to ongoing literacy work, and suggestions for books about names to read aloud to your class. These activities are also a great way to build community during the first weeks of school.
Your students will be:
- reading their names in print
- counting the letters in their names
- chanting names of students in their class
- sorting consonants and vowels
- using a venn diagram to sort letters in their names and letters in a friends' name
