The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi is a great picture book to share with ELL students, during back to school, or when you are welcoming a new student to your class mid year. The Name Jar also works well for any lessons about diversity. There are great opportunities for discussion about the value of a name and the importance of respecting an individual’s background.
The Name Jar product includes multiple activities that support standard reading and writing skills. You may not have time to complete every activity included in this packet; pick and choose a few that work for your group.
