The Name Jar written by Yangsook Choi is the story of a young girl who has left Korea and is new to America. She quickly learns that her name is difficult to pronounce by the children she meets and decides she needs a new American name.
On the first day of school she tells the class that she hasn’t chosen a name yet. The students decide to help by placing names inside a jar. Her encounters with a Korean merchant who tells her the meaning of her name, and a fellow classmate’s comments bring her to the realization
