In this document, you will find for Guy de Maupassant’s 1884 short story “The Necklace” a close-reading guide and a reading assessment containing matching, multiple-choice, and open-ended questions all with a key. This is a wonderful story to use to teach your students about situational irony. The close-reading guide will help you navigate the story with your students as I have prepared a detailed answer key with analysis. The reading assessment is largely matching style, but I did include a multiple-choice selection that is formatted like many standardized test questions. I put the open-ended response prompt on a separate page in case you wanted to use the objective questions only.
