The character development graph featured in this activity provides a visual representation of character development using evidence from the text. Using the two main characters: Madame and Monsieur Loisel, students search for quotations about the characters that are definitive of their character. The story may be broken into chunks by the teacher or students, or the teacher may select 4 paragraphs out of the story of greatest importance. From those sections, the student selects evidence regarding that character and writes it along the continuum of "selfish" or "self-sacrificing". Once done for each section, the student will be able to more easily determine whether or not the character is static or dynamic and have evidence to prove the shift that occurs in the character. The organizer also contains an analysis section where the student must analyze the graph and thus analyze character development.
