This exemplar 5-paragraph essay about "The Necklace" is a perfect mentor text for your students to examine before writing their own essay about "The Necklace."
This essay analyzes characterization of Mathilde Loisel's husband, Monsieur Loisel. Each year, I have my students read this essay and then write their own essay analyzing the character traits of Mathilde herself.
The sample essay is perfect for teaching them how to embed quotations, use subtle transitions, and explain their arguments thoroughly. During writing workshop weeks, students analyze and annotate some aspect of the essay each day of the week. They then apply what they learned from the mentor text to their own writing. So although reading the sample essay as a class might only take part of a class period, it is better to use it as a guide over a number of days.
