This Power-point includes 72 image-packed and informational slides to help you and your students create a beautifully drawn artwork using the art concept known as negative space. First, you’ll learn all about negative space from its definition and how to recognize it, to how we encounter it in in our everyday lives, from artwork (2D and 3D) and optical illusions, to logos and even in the world of tattoos. The presentation begins by laying the foundation of what negative space is by looking at plenty of amazing examples. The project culminates by asking students to put this knowledge into practice as they learn how to create their very own negative space artwork using their own names (or another word of their choosing). Step by step pictures guide you through the artistic process, from thumbnail sketches and refining your ideas, to carrying out the artwork and the finishing touches. You’ll also learn about patterns and repetition as they are needed to fill in the negative spaces of your artwork. Examples of repetition and patterns found in nature and man-made are shown. Pattern making is made easy with a video link and printable or projected visuals. An additional worksheet for making your name appear in 3D negative space is also included for those who are looking for something a bit more ambitious. Finally, there are plenty of both student and professional examples of what to do as well as what not to do to insure success. I trust that your students will fall in love with their new-found knowledge of negative space and will enjoy this creative activity as much as mine do.
