A picture is worth a thousand words? That's what they say anyway, and as you know, a cartoon can be a great teaching, learning and even assessment tool to get a students thoughts flowing.
This self-generated series of 11 US history cartoons is one of the most effective resources that I currently use in my classroom.
At the beginning and end of each unit, I present the students with the cartoon (image) and have them try to put the story together as best they can. It is amazing to see how the visual stimulates discussion, recall and connections in small groups and individuals.
I have also included a "guiding questions" handout to help students in their review of the cartoons (although I would wait to hand this out until after they have attempted to extract as much information from the picture on their own), along with a "word bank" to help them generate relevant vocabulary.
In the end, the cartoon collection is used as an end of year review, Many of my students reflected back that the cartoons helped them to recall the most!
