Product Description

After the Civil War, a group of southerners led by Henry Grady advocated the modernization of the South. In this lesson, students analyze Grady's speeches to determine what he felt embodied the "new South." They then use documents detailing the social, political and economic characteristics of the South after the Civil War to determine if Grady's description of the New South was accurate. Documents are linked.
